What do you do with a broken bike?

If your bike can’t be fully repaired, you can recycle your bicycle at a local specialty recycling facility. Contact your local recyclers to find out if they can accept bikes for recycling.

What can I do with an old bike frame?

Frames will often be accepted at scrap yards to be broken down, and repurposed. Chains are difficult to recycle, but you may be able to donate them to a bike shop or charity for re-use

What to do with old clothes that Cannot be donated Ireland?

Recycle. As a last resort, there are clothing recycling centres and banks in Ireland that will take anything that you can’t donate, sell or reuse. Some clothing stores also allow you to bring back their old clothes to be recycled.

What do you do with old bike helmets?

Most local recycling programs don’t want mixed materials. So your best solution may be to take the helmet apart, put the plastic shell in your plastic recycling, break up the EPS foam for use as packing material or a soil amendment, and pitch the strap and buckle in the trash.

Do charity shops Wash clothes before selling them?

Yes some charity shops will wash clothes. I have worked in one and someone very close to me also works in one. BUT, as it’s an expense to them to wash, they will normally only wash them if they feel the clothes are quality items or quality brands that will sell.

Can you put socks in a clothes bank?

If you can’t fix, upcycle, sell, share or give away unwanted items, they can still go into a textile recycling bank. Socks, pants, even old curtains, they can all be re-used.

Do charity shops accept bike helmets?

Donating to charity shops is out of the question; they’ll almost never take any safety/protective equipment that is used. Common advice is to find local organisations that accept used helmets.

Do bike helmets really expire?

The government testing body in the US, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), recommends replacing a bicycle helmet every five to 10 years. The Snell Memorial Foundation, which also certifies helmets for safety, states a firm five years.

Should I replace my helmet if I drop it?

If it fell with your head inside, regardless if involved in an accident or not, yes, you should replace it. If it fell on its own, but you notice a deformation on the EPS, or you see visible damage marks on the shell, you should replace it.

How long are bicycle helmets good for?

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, for example, advises that unless manufacturers recommend otherwise, you should get a new helmet every five to 10 years.
